Ecology Warm Ups
September 10, 2012
1) The seal receives 10% of the clam's energy and the shark receives 10% of the seal's energy because the rest of the energy is used for everyday things by the clams and the seal.
2) An example of producer and consumer relationship would be phytoplankton to the clam. An example of predator and prey relationship would be the seal to the shark.
3) The clam is the primary consumer in this food pyramid. `

The niche of the squirrel in omnivore which means that it eats both plants and meat. They live in environments where they are they prey and they spread seeds and nuts all around to grow new plants, Help control and balance the ecosystem. If another organism comes in with same niche, then the balance would go away. So competition will happen then natural selection and the strongest of them will survive and reproduce.
September 14, 2012
The deer, rabbit, and the grasshopper would compete because there is going to be competition between them for food, because they eat the same things.
September 17, 2012
Plants compete food, water, and sunlight, and plants would compete when another organism comes in with the same niche and then they would compete and the strongest of the 2 would survive and reproduce.

The whole species might just die out because their ecosystem is being destroyed. Their population could shrink because the ecosystem can only sustain a specific number of the species. They could migrate, but habitats like theirs is being destroyed all across the world.

The environment got warmer and it shows that because it says that the climate is fairly warmer which means that global warming is happening. It is a long term change because it happened over a couple of decades and the rabbit is definitely adapting to the climate because some of the rabbits have shorter hair than the others. If it was a short term change the rabbits would have to migrate. The future populations would probably have even shorter hair because the earth is going to get hotter and hotter.

This is long term environmental change because the lava will eventually cool and turn into igneous rock. But it is also a short term change because the volcano would erupt and the dust and lava would eventually go away. They would have to migrate when the volcano is erupting but after the rock cools then the animals can come back.

Intra specific competition is when organisms from the same species compete for their needs. Examples are fighting for mates, fighting for food, fighting for the right as head of the herd, etc. Inter specific competition is when different organisms compete. Examples are fighting for space, fighting for food, etc.
September 26, 2012
If a population of organisms increases past a ecosystems carrying capacity, the resources would start to become limited and the organism would have to compete for their resources. Carrying capacity is the max number of organisms that can be supported by the ecosystem. This would be a example of intraspecific competition and the weaker organisms would die out. Darwin's finches adapted to their environmental change, by their different beaks. Every thing else is similar; body, color, eyes, etc. But they have different beaks for eating seeds, eating meat, eating fruit, etc. This is a example of evolution.
